The fact that as more and more get on the Challenge, more and more people are eating less fast foods. Went to see my podiatrist yesterday who has been on the 90 Day Challenge and she is down 30 pounds. Her goal for next 90 Days is another 30 pounds. Hearing the excitement in her voice and having her show me how much bigger her lab coat is now was so wonderful.

So, I’ve been saying this crap since 1998 and should’ve made a point to write it,

date it and seal it up in an envelope to prove myself.. but either way, here’s the deal.

Anyone who paid half an ounce of attention to the world over the past 20 years has seen this moment coming.

The moment in which the well-educated became the poor. The moment in which college graduates from esteemed

universities entered into a job market that didn’t have enough jobs to support them.

The moment of reality.

We can look at this problem from the view of the jobless educated first:
You spend your whole life being told “its okay” and “you’ll go to college and get a good job”
You get through college, and there aren’t enough jobs. The only people getting jobs are the ones

with a connection in their field or an extreme talent… leaving the masses underemployed or jobless.

So, now there’s a large number of educated people with nothing to do.

They’re concerned about defaulting on their loans. They can’t afford to live independently.

And in essence, the dream they were promised has been revoked… and all the time they invested in becoming

adults has ended with them still being children in essence, relying on parents for job connections, housing, subsidies, etc…

From the business perspective:
The goal is to keep costs down. Interns and overachiever”s are the best employees.

Those who work free, or those who do more work than they’re paid for are a safe

bet for keeping your costs down and productivity high…

because even CEOs worry that their money won’t be there tomorrow, and you don’t rise to the

top of a company by being loose with the cash and caring about everyone along the way.

Care enough so your employees like you, spend enough to keep things moving forward.

So out of a large populus of well-educated potential employees, only a small percentage actually fit the needs…

and hey, with that many people applying for so few jobs companies get to be pickier and may even adopt the idea that entry levels are disposable.

And the societal truth:
We’ve become so self focused that we’re dehumanizing those around us. We gladly turn on TV and watch other people’s bad behavior as entertainment…

those are their lives, not scripted shows. And, think about Army recruitment tactics. Used to be that people signed up for a greater cause.

“The Army needs you to help US fight the enemy and protect America”… now its “An Army of One.

” They make you think it’s all about you, because that’s what sells.

Can we see where the disagreement is?
It’s about feelings. Business inherently has very few. Where as recent college grads of the hipster and

emo generations have strong emotional reactions. Where getting picked on leads to suicide instead of a fist fight,

and everyone gets an award, and even the worst athlete gets to play on a team because we’ve become scared of bruising egos.

Nobody told the YOUTH that its okay to fail and not be good at something, and many of them were so coddled

that the thought of businesses and employers not caring hurts them deeply.

Nobody told businesses that the new crop of entry-level employees had developed a deeper feeling

set than previous generations. And for all that can be knocked, they have a greater sense of empathy

and understanding than groups that came before them… they also need more pats on the back and need to celebrate smaller victories for validation purposes.

And, nobody really cares about anyone but themselves. It’s a very individual, take it to heart, personal battle.

How do we fix it?
I don’t know. Its like the tin man and the lion are face to face, but they’re not side to side

with Dorothy an Scarecrow to fight a greater evil.. they’re fighting each other.

All I know is that the people at the top (both in terms of government and finance) are so out of touch

with what we’re all going through down here that nothing is going to change unless we push someone

from the crowds into power, and surround them with a house and senate and cabinet from the crowds.

Career politicians don’t know what its like to have a real career. If they were in real jobs and were as

unproductive for lets say IBM as they are on Capital Hill they’d be downsized and they’re jobs would be outsourced.

A young man emailed me about his 90 Day Challenge in July. I met him a few years back

and felt his email was sincere and not just a pitch to sell me something. I was busy at the

time told him I was going out of town but when I got back I would take a look.
